My husband and I helped Zeke cross the Bridge yesterday just before noon. When I took him back for his recheck on Friday at the specialist office in Greensboro, his protein and creatine levels had increased significantly. Based on the ultrasound results and repeated blood work and other tests, it appeared that he only had 20-25% kidney function. She had already told us that the ultrasound revealed chronic kidney disease. Although he was eating some, it was not because he really wanted to, but because we were trying to make a game out of feeding him. The vet offered us the option of giving him IV fluids everday at home to keep him comfortable and taught me how to administer the fluids. Also, based on the level of kidney failure, she said that having his leg fixed was not an option.

After many tears, we decided that we would not let Zeke get to the point where he was in severe pain or total kidney failure. We felt that we had tried everything within our power to get him better and we had to decide if continuing on was for him or for us. Ultimately, we decided that our course was the hardest one we could follow, but it was also the right one for our big yellow boy. I had had the talk with Zeke on Thursday night and felt like he was telling me on Friday that he was ready.

The boys have always slept beside our bed, but on Friday night, we all slept in the bed. On Saturday morning, I fixed him eggs and bacon and he ate just a little. We went outside and he took a long walk around the yard like he was saying goodbye. He and Gus have always liked to chase things tied to fishing line and he tried to play just a little. The four of us said our goodbyes and we made that last drive to our local vet where we held him as he crossed.

Thanks so much to all of you for your good thoughts. We are devastated, but feel at peace with our choice.
