Dog Mammal Vertebrate Dog breed Canidae

Each year the American Kennel Club (AKC) releases registration statistics for all of its accepted dog breeds. For many years running, the Labrador Retriever has appeared at the top of this list, making it the most popular dog breed in the United States. But what is it about the Labrador that makes it so popular? Keep reading to find out!

Labrador Temperament and Personality

The Labrador Retriever, often called the Lab, is a medium- to large-sized breed that generally weighs between 55 and 80 pounds at maturity. While they may not be the largest dog breed, they are certainly not one of the smallest and they are full of life and personality. The Labrador Retriever is known for its friendly and fun-loving nature and for its eagerness to make new friends. This breed gets along well with other dogs and they are very gentle and patient with children, making them the ultimate family pet. One thing to keep in mind with this breed, however, is their need for exercise and human interaction. This high-energy breed needs a lot of daily exercise and without plenty of human interaction they are prone to boredom. Any Lab owner will tell you that a bored Lab is a destructive one so if you aren’t able to spend a lot of time with your dog on a daily basis this might not be the right breed for you.

Training and Behavior for Labradors

Aside from their friendly nature and people-oriented personality, many people love the fact that the Labrador Retriever is a very smart and versatile breed. These dogs are highly intelligent which means that they respond well to training as long as you keep your training sessions short and fun. Labradors excel at a variety of dog sports including flyball, agility, and obedience but they also excel as working breeds, trained for search and rescue, therapy, guidance, and more. This breed particularly enjoys spending time outdoors and in the water so they are excellent camping and outdoor companions.

Aside from their personality and trainability, the Labrador Retriever is also a very attractive breed. These dogs come in three main colors – black, yellow, and chocolate brown – though there is a fourth unofficial color, fox red. This breed has a thick double coat that sheds fairly heavily, so you should be prepared to brush your dog daily and to bathe him as needed. The Labrador may not be the best choice for small apartments or condos, but they are generally a pretty adaptable breed as long as their needs for exercise and attention are met. Just be sure to keep a close eye on your Lab because they can be very mischievous at times and they are very talented escape artists!

By now you should have a better understand of the Labrador breed and of what makes it such a great family pet. If you are thinking about getting a dog, this breed is definitely one you should consider! After all, millions of people have chosen the Labrador and they do not regret it!
