Our youngest beagle Boomer has been diagnosed with cancer. He went in Thursday for his annual and I mentioned that his anal glands were really full again the vet took him in the back to express them and found a mass. They did a needle biopsy but didn't seem that concerned about it. We talked more about Blaze's teeth than Boomer. She said we probably wouldn't get the results until Wed because of the holiday. When she called me at work yesterday I again thought it was about Blaze's teeth. She told me the name of the cancer but I think I stopped hearing at "Boomer has cancer". I left work and we took him in to discuss our options. It seems it is a fairly fast moving cancer so they wanted to do an ultrasound and chest xray to be sure it had not spread already and they came back clear, thank goodness. So I am calling today to make the appointment for his surgery this Thursday. She is hoping that because we caught it early she will be able to get good margins around the mass. When she was talking about size it seems like the size of a quarter. I don't think it's in the anal gland itself. She mentioned that there may be some loss of sphincter control, but I can live with that.
Boomer doesn't seem to know he's sick, he is still his energetic self. I love all my dogs, but Boomer is my cuddler. He is also my escape artiste and has given me more gray hairs than I care to count. But he holds a very special place in my heart.
If you could please keep a good thought for him on Thursday that everything goes well, I would greatly appreciate it.
