Prominent American #1:

On President Obama's call to action to help Haiti: his administration will use this to burnish their, shall we say, credibility with the black community, in the… the both light-skinned and dark-skinned black community in this country. It’s made to order for them.

Prominent American #2:

Haiti's Earthquake was a result of a pact with the Devil. When Haiti was a French colony, it swore a pact with the Devil in escaping French rule. But ever since they have been cursed by one thing after the other. That island of Hispaniola is one island. It is cut down the middle on the one side is Haiti the other is the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, etc. Haiti is in desperate poverty.

at least get the facts straight:

Statement Regarding Pat Robertson's Comments on Haiti

CBN.com – VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., January 13, 2010 --On today’s The 700 Club, during a segment about the devastation, suffering and humanitarian effort that is needed in Haiti, Dr. Robertson also spoke about Haiti’s history. His comments were based on the widely-discussed 1791 slave rebellion led by Boukman Dutty at Bois Caiman, where the slaves allegedly made a famous pact with the devil in exchange for victory over the French. This history, combined with the horrible state of the country, has led countless scholars and religious figures over the centuries to believe the country is cursed. Dr. Robertson never stated that the earthquake was God’s wrath. If you watch the entire video segment, Dr. Robertson’s compassion for the people of Haiti is clear. He called for prayer for them. His humanitarian arm has been working to help thousands of people in Haiti over the last year, and they are currently launching a major relief and recovery effort to help the victims of this disaster. They have sent a shipment of millions of dollars worth of medications that is now in Haiti, and their disaster team leaders are expected to arrive tomorrow and begin operations to ease the suffering.

You know, if I called another member on this board a "douchebag" [sic] I would be flamed.

BTW - what is the CBN?

Prominent American #1's comment is taken out of context.
Can you put the quote in proper context for me?

If you look at the transcript you will find that quote surrounded by a rambling monologue ranging from communism, socialism, cruise ships, Bill Clinton, Colin Powell, Jimmy Carter, Al Sharpton, and Venezuelan oil.

Actually, I think Katyris beat Maple to this.

As far as Rush goes, he is a "shock jock" plain and simple. He will say anything to garner attention. You are giving it to him. I don't watch or listen to him, so wouldn't have known about this comment unless our more liberal friends posted.

I don't know about Pat Robertson. I'm willing to give him a little slack based on his age, the era he grew up in, and the fact that his comments may have been taken out of context. Don't have time to read the transcript right now. But I will this weekend.

Okay, lunch time is over, back to work now.

Sorry, but I think the chances that Rahm Emanuel and the political wing of the White House didn't discuss how best to play this to make Obama look good to certain groups are pretty much zero. Are we supposed to believe there wasn't a discussion about trying to show a difference between how Bush handled Katrina and Obama and Haiti?

It's what politicians do. All of them.

As for Robertson. It was just the other day that Obama called Harry Reid's Negro statement "Inartful but not mean-spirited". I think it would be pretty easy to make the same statement about Robertson's. He sees the world purely as God vs. the Devil and it's not too surprising that his comments reflect that.

In this particular case I hope they did. The American people ought to have confidence in their government's ability to respond to a disaster of such human cost and destruction.

The local, state, and federal response to Katrina was a national disgrace. I'm glad we're doing better.

Bush was very fond of being the "commander in chief" and often referred to himself accordingly. His duty during Katrina was to command...and when it became obvious to anyone with a television that NO and Louisiana officials were failing to save lives and restore order to the city he should have sent the federal military in DAYS before he finally did. That's what I hold Bush responsible for...and I'd be willing to bet he holds himself responsible for it as well.

If Obama learned the lessons of that and took charge of the U.S. response to Haiti as soon as he could we're all better off because of it.

It was Rahm Emanuel who said never let a good crisis go to waste, so why is everybody on Prominent American #1's ass for pointing it out?

I realize everything is supposed to be purely humanitarian but you're living under a rock if you think they didn't see an opportunity here for Obama to distinguish himself and there was no discussion about it.

I'm all for the aid, but let's not fool ourselves about it.
