I just wanted to confirm if I am on the right path when it comes to working with my foster.

She gets very exited when we meet other dogs on a walk. Some times, she gets aggressive and growl, but mostly exited and it appears to be happy excitement

Which is the better method:
Stop, put her in a sit/stay and work at keeping her attention (using treats as needed but weening her off them as soon as possible).

Keep walking and work on heel (this gets more complicated but is closer to the end goal), again with treats.

Or other?

And if she isn't growling, how do you tell the difference between aggressive and just exited? She does have dog-dog issues but NOT WITH ALL DOGS. I swear most of the time it appears (to me) to be more excitement and less aggression on walks (with a few exceptions)

I'll see if I can find the book. ETA: I just read the description on her website, wow, perfect book for Nina!! I'll see how much it is and suggest it for whoever adopts it!

I do not allow greetings. I am just working on getting her to walk past another dog without jumping around so much!!

I also don't mind her watching the other dog, and when I put her in a sit/stay I don't ask her to stare at me the entire time. All I want is for her to stay in her sit really, and if she's getting too exited then I have her refocus on me to calm down or just once in awhile during her sit/stay look at me (the focus thing).

So far she has always gotten up from her sit/stay as the dog passes.

HK - good point, the sit stay should be obtained before walking past (makes sense to me at last).

I was using a prong for abit but have switched to a halti this week and prefer it. I know the prong was not tight enough but couldn<t bring myself to make it tighter. she is NOT a fan of the halti though haha, but its is not so bad that she can't have a good walk with it.

Yes, on trails and most places I can (and do) move back with her so there is space between her and the other dog.

once the dog has passed (even if it is close) she is perfect, will sit and just watch them.
