Hi everyone,
I have a lovely 11 year old black lab who was diagnosed with bacteria and yeast in her ears. The Vet prescribed Surolan. Instructions said to instill a good squirt into each ear twice daily. After 3 days of treatment, my dog cannot hear a thing! I called the Vet and was told that he had never heard of such a thing. I am to bring her in, but I wonder if I was overzealous with the medication. It did say an good squirt and that's surely what I did. Anyone hear of this? I would die if I've done permanent damage!

I'm using it in one of my dog's ears right now and have been for about two weeks. My vet did a culture and it came back yeast. I've used Surolan a number of times over the years and no problems. The bottle I have is fairly small (30ML) and I still have some left after two weeks. I gently massage her ear after putting the drops in to make sure they get spread around and down into the ear canal sufficiently. Assume your bottle is the same and has a long tip on it that allows you to get the drops further into the ear canal? I guess if you put enough of anything into an ear it could cause temporary deafness, but unless you got a lot larger bottle than I did.....it seems unlikely you would have used that much. Best to check with your vet to ease your mind and maybe ask him exactly how much you should use each time you apply it. One other thing....Did your instructions/your vet tell you to shake the bottle really well before using the Surolan?

Please let us know what you find out and how it goes with your dog. I hope her ears clear up quickly and her hearing returns okay.

To clarify, the Surolan was prescribed four 14 days, but the hearing loss happened after only three days. Thank you for the info on Surolan. I am hoping there is no permanent damage.
Ah. Well it must be rare but I'd stop it immediately and make sure my Vet knows. Maybe coincidence, maybe not. I know, you said you did tell your Vet but maybe show him the literature? There are other things you could try; Burrows Solution and Otomax are two I've used. No doubt they also have side effects that probably affect only a small percentage of users.

And there's no way you could have known this ahead of time, or your Vet. You did note the one dog had only temporary hearing loss? Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. Have an appt with vet on Monday. Her hearing seems to be a bit better today. I'm hoping so. I have stopped the treatment until we see the vet.
It's too bad you couldn't get in to see the Vet before Monday. Hopefully her ear infection won't get worse. :( Did the vet advise that you should stop using the Surolan until you saw him? Glad to hear that her hearing seems better today. Perhaps it was just down to the amount you were using. Please keep us updated. I'm curious as to what your vet thinks......being as I have used Surolan a fair bit over the years. I would guess that deafness caused by ear meds would be fairly unusual.

I use Surolan on Tess for almost 2 years and not had a problem. I also use an ear wash which I have found good.

Hopefully her ears will not get worse and the vets can help.

Went to vet last night and was told that eardrums are excellent and that the ear infection has cleared up. As for the hearing loss..... time will tell. It is possible that I put in too much initially and that it will take time for it to work itself out. Hearing seems to be a little bit better. She can now hear some high pitched sounds. Keeping fingers crossed. Vet said he would call the company and let them know and to find out if there have been any other incidences of deafness temporary or otherwise reported. So I wait......

Thanks for letting us know and glad that the infection seems to have cleared up. It must have been fairly mild to have cleared up with only a few days of the Surolan. We just finished a two plus week course of Surolan with our dog and her ear seems alright now too......but I shall keep a close eye on it just in case it flairs up again. For some reason one ear seems prone to yeast infections. No problems with her hearing. I hope your dog's deafness is only temporary. Good thoughts for her. :)

My dog was diagnosed with ear infection and prescribed Surolan and she is now deaf. 100% deaf! My vet said it’s the medicine and if you look at the pamphlet inside the box it says in small letters that it can cause hearing loss! Wish someone had told me.. I’ll never touch this stuff again!! Don’t use it.

Did any of the dogs that had hearing loss after using surolan get their hearing back? My 13.5 year old Lab was treated for ear infections and her hearing was just fine prior and now she's close to 100% deaf :( I'm so sad and hope that her hearing comes back.

I had the exact same issue with my dog. She completely lost her hearing after only three days of use. However, after about 7 to 10 days she started getting her hearing back. It is now completely back. There is a warning on this medication that it can cause hearing loss and deafness.
