We just moved to the country, so I new to the area of Ticks. I found my first tick on my dog today. We were able to remove the whole tick with tweezers. I called the vet and she said that common practice is to wait and watch. Watch for lethargy, and lameness. They didn't want to see the tick, and test it.

Is this common practice? He has to go to the vets for his annual next week. She said we can discuss preventitives then.

As far as preventitives go, Do I go with a color or a topical? Am I just over reacting....?

Don't worry, I find tick on my dogs on a weekly basis(just found one on my Yellow yesterday, embedded right above his eye) Just yank it out and move on.

I do use Frontline Plus, you may want to ask your vet for a 3 month supply.

Right now I use advantage for Fleas, can I use that in combination with frontline? Or is that overkill?

I think Frontline has lost its effectiveness. For the past couple years folks have been complaining that 3 weeks after applying they are finding fleas. I switched to Advantix 2 years ago and I am PLEASED. I live a flea-ville and ticks are already out.

I agree, in the past few years, even after an application of Frontline, I found ticks, but I thought it might have been because it was counterfeit. I bought it from some random company online because it was the best price, then I read that counterfeiting Frontline is common. So now I only buy it from well known companies such as Drs Foster Smith or 1800 Pet meds.

K9 Advantix isn't an option for us because we have cats and it's toxic to them.

I've been informed that Frontline doesn't work anymore. I just remove ticks manually when I find them.

First I have heard that Frontline does not work anymore. Been using it for years with never a problem with fleas or ticks and I live in tick heaven with 20 acres of woods/wetlands, I usually find 2-3 on my body on a daily basis. I did find a tick on one dog yesterday near his eye, but that is very uncommon and maybe the Frontline does not work as well in the facial region.

Also, I buy my stuff over the internet from Australia, since Merril Inc. is based in Australia. Only difference I have see is the packaging will be in KG instead of LBS.

After talking to the vet, I switched the boys to Revolution. It covers heartworms, fleas, ticks, and a couple of other things. Buddy doesn't have the negative reaction to it that he did with Frontline, which makes me happy.
