My supervisor and I continue to have problems. I am convinced that I need to tape record our meetings, because she denies having said things, and says that I am twisting things around and hearing only what I want to hear.

My question is, can I record our meetings and not tell her?

Legally it depends on what state you live in. In some you can tape without the other's knowledge and in some it is illegal.

That does not mean that your office/company/university/whatever may choose to not allow it even if it is legal in your state. It's possible that you could end up getting fired simply for the fact that you have taped people without their knowledge and others find that scary and a violation of their privacy.

Perhaps it would make more sense to suggest to the person that your meetings should be taped because you simply disagree on what was said. You may get the same result without the potential problems.

Illegal. However, and TRUST ME I understand the frustration, you can say something like - let me be sure I understand - you want me to xyz, correct? if yes, in front of her write it down, if no, have her restate, you restate then write it down. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS!~

You can always tell her that you would like to record the meeting so that you are sure you understand everything she is saying. ;) She might have a big enough ego to think that's a great idea.

Even if you did record it, and presented the recording as proof.. you'll have a very pissed off boss on your hands.. embarrassment can lead to hostility and you'd probably do more harm than good to this situation.

Yes, that.

Do you both have email at work? I would put anything work related in emails only, if possible.

I would simply tell her 'Since I am not understanding correctly what you are saying, I am going to record our meeting for me to listen to again at home, to get the most out of your time and effort.'
