in AUGUST of 2011. His sister emailed me and said they want to plan a 13th birthday surprise for her daughter for a trip to Disney when she turns 13. They want all of us to go... His parents, us, SIL and family in Nashville and the 5 of them. That would be 13 total. Everyone is up for it but us. I have NO interest in going to Florida in August, let alone spending a week with SU's family on vacation. The week at his parents for 4th of July is plenty for me. SU doesn't want to go with all of them either. I can hear the bitching already about who isn't doing what at the right time. No thank you.

This very thing happened to me a couple years ago, In-laws planned a huge vacation to Disney. I had a new baby that cried nonstop and a terrible toddler...I had no interest in wrangling those two kids while tagging along with inlaws. So, I sent my hubby and the oldest kid. They had a blast and I was content at home.

I agree. That's far to go, too. Florida in August is surprisingly pleasant. Why do they need everyone there?

You could plead, cost?the economy? the distance?

Or you could just say you want to share that special place (Disney World) with Makenna and your husband alone......

Nice thoughts... but we went last year. I can't cry distance the one that want us to go live 4 hours North of us in Michigan. They want us all to have a big family vacation.

As for August.. I loved there for 10 years. Holy humid and hot!!!!! I can already hear SU complaining, not to mention myself.

Just be honest, just tell them if you were interested in taking a family vacation, you'd want to go where your family wanted to go, and thats not hot/humid/horrible Florida in August. Perhaps you'd be open to somewhere else at some other time, but that doesn't seem like it will work for you.

Does your daughter start school in August? Maybe you can use that in your favor. I know we start school the first week of August here.

I hate it when people try to rope you into committing to stuff that is so far in the future. The list of plausible excuses gets way too small.

I'd just prepare myself to be the bad guy, take lots of crap, and just say sorry but you don't think you can go this time.

When you start to waver, think of the scene every night when it's time for dinner. "Where do you want to eat?" "I don't care, what do you want to do?" "Well we had Italian last night, and Grandpa hates Chinese..."

Ugh. Not only will be hot as hell, it will be really crowded. It always is during the summer months. Unless they want to buy all the tickets and stuff together, I would play along so there is family harmony for awhile...then maybe early next summer you can slowly start to put in some doubt...then maybe come down with "something" in late July...as long as Makenna doesn't get her hopes up!

They are SU's family...its his responsibility to tell them no and to tell them why. Just make sure he lets you in on what he tells them. ;)

That is way too far in advance for me to plan. I don't know what I'm doing next week, let alone August of 2011 . . . and that probably would have been my initial response when told of the plans. I have been to Disney in August, and it was miserably hot and humid. We spend one weekend a year with my SU's family, and that is enough for both of us. It would be my worst nightmare to have them plan a trip like that.

My excuse (after a rather horrible family vacation years ago )is the same every time the wizards get together with another adventure scheme.

"Been there.Done that.No Thanks"

No excuses about heat or distance or money. I tried the less direct approach in the past and it's like a friggin debate. This shuts them up.

My family always went (well, still does) to Florida for vacation in August. My dad was a welder and wanted to go on vacation during the hottest time of year so he didn't have to be working then. =) They can't get out of the habit now even though they're retired and could go whenever they wanted.

If you're on the water it isn't so bad. We've gone to Gulf Shores in August and it was OK. I can't imagine being in one of those parks, though, waiting in long lines and sweltering! And then paying $5 for your bottle of water to cool yourself off...lol. I know it's better at Disney but we went to Six Flags Atlanta one August and I thought my shoes were going to melt into the blacktop.

:nono:Disney World in August is hell on earth. Hot, miserably humid, and the lines for the best attractions are over an hour long, filled with cranky kids and crankier parents. :yell: You could not pay me enough to go to DW in the summer.

As it turns out my SIL looked at the prices for Disney... It turns out she had no idea how much it costs. She didn't ask me or I would have told her. Hubby doesn't want to go anyway. He said their plans are not my plans. I told him he had to tell them because I didn't want it to look like it was all me.

I'd always heard that Disney in Aug wasn't too bad, crowdwise -- that the schools down below the Mason/Dixon line go back in early Aug, and that whole contingent of kids is out of the picture.

Weather, OTOH, can be either pleasant and passable or downright brutal.

Disney World in the summer, is a waste of money. We did it...ONCE. All the kids wanted to do was go back to the hotel pool and swim. It is ungodly hot there in August.
Maybe someone will have to attend summer school? lol jk
