Somewhere to stay near Boston

At the end of June my husband and I are going to visit his son, wife and 2 boys who live in Montreal. What we had planned was after a week in Montreal we would all go down towards Boston (we are flying into Montreal and out of Boston back to the UK)

Last year they stayed somewhere right on the coast so I was wondering if you guys could suggest somewhere? The boys are 4 and 2 so need stuff for them to do. I have realised that we would be travelling down on 4th July weekend and I believe that the Tall Ships are in Boston from 8th-11th July so accommodation might be scarce.

Any tips/ideas would be great.

I'll check with friends who have young kids. Maybe somewhere in southern NH or north shore MA might be an option. It's not far from Boston and there are buses or the train to take to the city so you wouldn't have to drive or try to park. I'd steer clear of the cape that weekend - unless crowds and traffic are your idea of adventure.

You might be able to find a house to rent on craigslist

I used it to find a place to stay in Boston last year with great results.

I really like Ipswich, MA - the beach is beautiful and the town is cute. It's a little bit of a drive to Boston though.
