My black lab is three years old and he sheds his coat all year round. At any point, if I gently tug his fur loads of hair comes out. My carpet, clothes, kitchen worktops etc etc, are just covered in hair and it is so hard to get rid off. Any suggestions?

Most Labs shed year round, some worse than others.

If you can pull out hair in clumps he is probably blowing his coat. My dogs blow their coat a couple of times per year.

Do you brush him out? Use something like a Zoom Groom and brush him out every few day. It will help quite a bit but they are always going to shed.
Is he shedding more than unusual for him or has he always shed this much?

No he has always shed this much, it just seems that he is a particularly heavy shedder. Love him to death though, he is a star! Although he has just chewed up my only pair of spectacles!

When Jack lays down on the carpet and then gets up, there is a "shadow" of Jack still laying on the carpet!!!! He sheds all the time, but it is much worse in the Spring. We've finally gotten used to it, and don't mind a little dog hair flavoring every now and then.
