Got seven of them here, al older ones that do one or another things better than others, except the cheap Brother that I paid $69 for in 1996. Does just a straight and zig zag stich, I'm guessing it's sewn at least a couple hundred miles of thread. Have abused the heco out of it, sewn several layers of canvas with it by staring it by hand, still works fine, if it shelled tommorow, it's been worth it. A rebuild on a motor for one of my real old ones would cost more than that.

The other one I use some is a New Home about a 100 or more years old, but I get carbon points cause it's foot powered. Great though for real heavy stuff.

I have a very basic Brother sewing machine from Walmart that does what I need it to - basically sew long straight lines to put blankies back together again. Really, that's the only reason I use it. I used to hand-sew those suckers and it took forever.

I have my mother's Singer, it's a good 30 years old if not 40. Basic, does what she needed and a little extra. Still works fine.

I have a newer Singer and also a foot powered Singer that was my grandmothers. It's from about 1900.

I really cannot give you a recommendation - but why don't you check out Consumers Reports? They probably have a current review.

I have a Kenmore sewing machine. My mom bought it for me about 9years ago. I love it. It has some fancy stitching options, but not much. It's just enough for me. And I'm fairly certain it was in the $100-$150 range.

HI about sewing machines. I would suggest you go to a local store that will let you sewing on there machines and try out what works best for your mom because they are all so different. I have 1 brother emb machine, 2 singers, 1 brother sewing machine and a 1890 singer. I love them all but I am very close to the singers they are super easy to get along with, and wal mart carries these brands and not that expensive. Good luck and happy sewing machine hunting.

Go to Joann Fabrics. They should be able to help you. I have my Mother's Viking, that is older than me, it worked great for a long time.
