There is a small ephemeral pond off the trail that leads up behind our house. Every year there are tons of tadpoles in it. If it is a wet year, the water stays in it long enough to let them grow up into little frogs and toads. If it is a dry year, the water dries up before they mature. In the past several years, the pond has devloped a small leak and it hardly ever holds water long enough. SU and I walked the dogs tonight and I decided to have a look at the pond. There was about 1/2 inch water in a small area and dozens of tadpoles swarming in the muck. I couldn't stand the thought of it, and went and hauled 4 five gallon buckets of water up to them (after treating it with the expensive fish water conditioner that I have to take the chlorene out) and poured it into the pond to give them another day, and hopefully some rain. I have become such a sap in my old age. :-\
