Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa sells for $16.2 million

A 1957 Ferrari has sold for nine million euros ($16.2 million) in Rome, setting a world record for the most expensive motor car ever to be sold at auction.

The 250 Testa Rossa, one of 34 models manufactured at Ferrari's factory in Maranello in the north of Italy, had completed several races in North and South America.

The previous record sale at auction was held by a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spider, which belonged to American actor James Coburn and was bought by British media personality Chris Evans for seven million euros ($12.6 million).

The Scaglietti-designed 250 is one of Ferrari's most distinctive cars and is considered the company's most collectable.

Fashion designer Ralph Lauren is reported to own two of the "pontoon-fender" racers.
