Have a question for those who have gone on a cruise. I was reading the info last night and it said formal wear required for evening dinner. What the heck is considered formal wear? I am a jean skirt, tank top type of chick. Do I have to wear a dress and heels?

On my cruise, you weren't supposed to wear jeans or jean skirts to the dinners. I didn't wear heels every time, but I did try to dress nicely.

There is usually a "formal" night, too. At least, there was one on my boat. My friend, her sister, and I all took prom dresses and wore those for the night. LOTS of people did it- so fun! :)

There were people who wore church/business attire, some who went all out, and there were some who were casual (khakis, dress pants, etc..). The food was sooo worth getting dressed up for on our cruise though. I'm ready for another!

Thanks. I am going to go do some vacation clothing shopping so I guess I will have to buy a few dresses.

the cruise i went on had a :"formal" dinner room but you did not have to go there if you did not want to you had food available 23 hours of the day everywhere else on the boat so why go to the formal dinner. i did cause i baught a suite for that purpose only. so i thoughtmay as well and never did again

It's been over 10 years since my last cruise (went right out of college) but for the dinners I wore dresses. There was one super formal night (some men were in tuxedos) where I wore a long dress.

Usually no shorts, jeans, tank tops, or swimsuits are allowed in the dining rooms. Formal night is the Captain's dinner and most people dress very nice...suits or tuxes for men, dressy dresses (some evening gowns but not all) or dressy pant suits for ladies. Depending on the cruise line, you may only have 1 or maybe 2 "formal" nights. The rest of the time khaki's and dress pants will work. Some of the cruise lines require you to dress formally for every meal. When I'm on vacation, I am NOT dressing up so I avoided those cruise lines. ;)

If you don't feel like dressing up, you can skip the dining room entirely on formal night. Like Dave mentioned, you won't go hungry on a cruise, even if you don't go to dinner. We're actually planning on skipping it on our next cruise, and eating in the buffet or one of the specialty restaurants instead.

Just remember that the same waitstaff who's in the dining room for dinner is all over the ship during the day and after dinner, so you should still tip according to guidelines or better (if you've been exceptionally happy) even if you sip the dining room all week. Two cruises ago, our assistant waiter would find DH in the casino and bring him chocolate every night-needless to say, he got a HUGE tip for amazing service.

We skipped the main dining room most of our cruise. We didn't really fit in with all the people at our table...they were all quite a bit older than us. :-\

We loved hanging out in the less formal dining rooms! We could just wear our shorts and tshirts....get all full and then go play some more. ;D

There are 2 nights that are very formal...cocktail dress and the guys are all in suits and ties or at the least sports coat, tie and slacks.
The other nights, you can get away with nice pant suit, skirt, top, etc and the guys in nice slacks, dress shirts.

Amanda you can literally take your prom dress and fit right in. I didn't know this and brought less dressy clothes. Our cruise had 2 formal dinners. Also they will make your boyfriend where a sports coat. I believe they have coats for him to borrow if he doesn't have one.

What ship are you going on?

The wait staff is usually phenomenal on cruises...they remember things you ask of them and show initiative to get you what you want.
Our daughter's dinner came out every night, already cut and he had the ketchup bottle next to her plate every night too, along with a choc milk waiting for her lol.
Remember though, even if you skip meals, you have to leave the same tip regardless.
