So....here's my story. Have a house. It came with 2 toilets (they usually do I realize this)...and all has been dandy with the toilets. They are doing their job for the most part. Friend comes over and cracks the lid which eventually splits it in half. Okay....new toilet seat is required....NOT NORMALLY A BIG DEAL RIGHT?

I run up to Home Depot, get a replacement seat and then set out to begin replacing. Bolts aren't BUDGING. Have neighbor and his dad come over and they spend an hour getting them out. My toilet is a Kohler low profile ONE PIECE toilet. Meaning, you can't get to the bolts that hold the screws in ANYWHERE. It looks like this:

I take bolts to HD to get new ones. Rude HD guy treats me like a dumb girl and basically refuses to help me, where I in turn get bitchy with him and ask him if he could suggest how I take a **** without a toilet seat (people were amused walking by us). Then he informs me that I have to order them from Kohler. Leave frustrated...I can't believe a big store like HD wouldn't carry something like that.

I go to Menard's. No luck there either.

I have a temp seat on that is not bolted down.

Fast forward to today...I finally get around to calling Kohler. I have t buy a special anchor kit for this toilet, which includes a special tool that will make removing the toilet seat bolts fairly easy.

Cost? $42.00 plus tax and I get to wait another 5 days to get it. Plus, I have to go back to HD and buy a Kohler seat as no other seats will work with it.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Jeese. It's a **** seat.

Toilets are more complicated than you'd think.

We were faced with a similar issue a couple years back. It's quite annoying!
I HATE HATE HATE replacing the toliet seat!!!!
Strap an inflated inner tube on that sucker and hold in place with duct tape.

New one we just got looks so tiny compared to the old one. But it uses less water, and so far the seat is fine.....

Oh, and I usually hate going to HomeDepot or Lowes for anything. I had some twit of a 19yr old tell me that these compression fittings for your water line only need to be tightened about one turn........BS!!!!! You crank on those puppies til they won't turn any more so as to "compress" the fitting down onto the pipe........the bathroom got very wet before I figured out what an A$$ that guy was.

Good Luck with your toilet.... :-\

HD was one of the contributing factors to the Great Dweck Closet Implosion of January 2007. If I'd've gotten good advice right from the start, my entire knee injury could have been avoided.

I like the li'l TrueValue hardware store in the neighborhood, where I can go in with a wood screw and say, "Gimme 125 more of THESE" and the owner dotters around in the back for 2 minutes and comes up with exactly what I need.

Buy a new toilet.
No. I already have to replace a furnace and central air. The house Gods are not being nice to me this week.
I have a toilet seat right now I'd like to shove up somebody's butt! No matter how tight I try to get the bolts, it loosens and my seat slides side to side.
Ok, Dani - laughing! You could always install a privacy fence and join Ryder out back til this is resolved...SORRY! Good luck - and I would complain to Kohler about it too!
Note to self ....... do NOT buy Kohler toilet - EVER!!!

I've started avoiding places like HD and Lowe's for stuff like this - opt for the specialty plumbing distro places. You pay a little more..but you get someone who knows what he's talking about, too. For most stuff, I've started going back to the local True Value store. They may have only 3 or 4 of an item, and you might have to rder things from time to time, but the service is much better. :D

Have you ever tried a Comfort Height toilet? They are slightly higher...and what a difference. We put one in our master bathroom. When I sit on a normal one it feels like I'm going to fall in!!

I do have a privacy fence. :)

But it's funny. I even said to the Kohler lady that I felt bad for yelling at the HD dude because he was *partly* correct. He was still rude though.
