Harley-Davidson Inc. announced Thursday morning it will cut 1,000 more jobs and drastically scale back production in 2009.

Citing a tough economic environment for its high-end motorcycles, Harley said it will implement production shutdowns at several plants, including Kansas City. The shut down is expected to last for about 14 weeks in 2009, including the entire fourth quarter.

An employee at the plant said workers were informed of the shutdown Thursday morning and that it would last a total of 16 weeks.

“It is obviously a very tough environment for us right now, given the continued weak consumer spending in the overall economy for discretionary purchases,” Harley-Davidson President and CEO Keith Wandell said in a statement. The Wis-based maker is the top seller of heavyweight motorcycles.
