I've told you how she is losing weight, blind, very, very hard of hearing and almost 17 yo. She has really lost weight, I can see her hip bones a little now. She still loves her snacks, and gets around ok, not great but ok. Today I came home and gave her her med in some chopped turkey boob er I mean breast. She ate it down, drank a little water, then walked into her bed and proceeded to throw it all up. She fell on her side and couldn't right herself and I grabbed her. She continued to gag and have the heaves but nothing was left in her little tummy. I changed her bedding, and wiped up her mouth and she is now resting in her bed. Here's the thing, I know her life isn't what it used to be when she could see and hear. I know she is frail and does still have some joyful times. But when do you know? I asked this before and she doesn't seem ready to give up but it's so hard to watch. Please help, any suggestions, encouragement would be appreciated.:( It's so hard to watch them get old. My heart is breaking, I swear.:(

I had two that lived to 15+ each. All I can tell you is that I knew when it was time. I think that one day I realized that I was doing everything for them. Helping them outside to go, helping them to their food, wiping their backside when they would sit into the pile they just dropped using all their strength to push it out. They still live with me, even though HK has and will have my current heart until one of us passes.

You just... know.

You know what you are made of, you know what Twiggy is made of. You know what she will tolerate and you must be able to know if it is too much.

Somewhere along the way, in an instant, all that knowledge comes together and you make the right choice. To allow more time or to help her across.

You'll know.

Twiggy is a dog or a cat? Sorry, I don't remember hearing about her.

Like Ed and Nance said - you will know. You'll see it in her eyes. Don't let her lose her dignity.

Prayers...

Twiggy is my Toy Fox Terrier. A beautiful, little soul.

About 5 years ago (notice she only has one good eye)

Now:( with no good eyes

Poor little Twiggy, and you too. I can only echo what others have said...when it gets to be too much for them and when you question whether you are delaying that step because of you or because they still have quality of life. It is never, ever easy, but it is the last loving gesture we can make for our pups.

Please don't think i'm being mean but go back to your post and read what you wrote and think about it. It's the hardest of decisions to make believe me we have all been there and done that. I hope you make the right decision for your pup

I agree with the others -- no one can know better than you when the proper time is.

And it's not a comfortable decision but it's even more uncomfortable to not make it when that proper time has come.
