Paint is a breed. Pinto is a coloring. A Paint must be a Paint, have some QH bloodline or TB bloodline in order to be a registered Paint. If it's got anything else, it's a Pinto.

A Paint can be registered as a Pinto. A Pinto cannot be registered as a Paint.

Thanks Laura. I thought pinto and paint were both coloring. What breed is a pinto then?

Pinto is not a breed. It's a color. Arabians can be pinto colored, Gypsy Vanner horses are pinto colored as are some Missouri Fox Trotters. Here's a purebred Arabian who is pinto.

Toby is a tobiano. Tobianos have faces that look like a solid colored horse, but the white patches cross over the back. Their legs are usually white from at least the knees down and they usually have a dark patch over the chest that looks like a shield. Tobianos do not have any blue eyes. http://www.apha.com/breed/tobiano.html

If you have a Paint that has a tobiano type pattern but has one or more blue eyes, it's a Tovero. http://www.apha.com/breed/tovero.html

Overo is my favorite pattern and they have dark bodies with patches that do not cross over the back. Their faces generally have wide blazes or are bald faces (mostly white) and will have one or both blue eyes. http://www.apha.com/breed/overo.html
