Loved the book. Marley sounds like he was a real joy (and a real pain in the arse) ... such a love!

However, that's not the point of this post. Do you think because of the book/movie the popularity of labs is going to increase? I worry that we're going to end up with an epidemic of everyone and their cousin having a lab just because they thought Marley was cute. I love labs and think that they're suited for a lot of people, but I also think they're NOT suited for many people. I worry many of these puppies are going to not get the care they require and will end up in shelters and lab rescues (like what happened with Dalmations after the movie 101 Dalmations came out - my sister has a Dalmation rescue ... the man who bought the pup decided when she was 5 months old he didn't want to keep her ... my sister and her dh found out about it before the guy took the pup to the shelter and said "well take her!").

Do you think these concerns are justified or do you think it'll pass because labs are so popular anyway?

If anything, I think M&M is a 2-hr advertisement for NOT getting a Lab. I could see the average wannbe pet owner thinking: Cute or not, there's no way I'm inviting THAT into my home!!!

That's what I originally thought, but there are a lot of stupid people out there who let cuteness win over sensibility.

I think the problem might be that people will think "It's only a movie" and then find out, in many cases, it's all true. That's why I believe so many pure bred Labs are dropped off at shelters. People don't do their homework and fail to raise the puppy correctly.

I just finally read the book about a month ago, and what a great read!

In regards to your question, I too was hoping that the film would be educational, but then again who knows what goes on in some people's minds.

TBH after reading the book thats the reason we got Alfie, not because of the naughtiness just because I wanted that kind of relationship plus before we even got Penny (terrier) we always wanted a Lab, dream dog if you wish but we didnt have time for one at that point
