OK we all know how our Labs can fool us but I now can confirm that Duke plays tricks on Freckles.
Three examples:
1. One morning routine is to open the shutters that face the street. Duke is always there to check things out and Freckles wanders elsewhere. If Duke sees something unusual he will growl and bark and that will bring Fredkles running to join in the barking. Most often there is nothing different to see but on several occasions Duke will growl anyway and Freckles comes running. As soon as Freckles starts growling Duke trots off leaving Freckles barking at nothing at all. Sometimes Freckles will spend five minutes trying to figure it out.
2. One backyard game I play with Freckles is to throw the tennis ball up on the roof. Freckles runs and stands under the eave waiting for it to come down, then he chases after it. Duke watched this game for a few throws then sauntered out into the yard where he figured out where the ball would actually drop then he caught it in the air while Freckles stood near the house.
Duke then came back on the deck, dropped the ball, and laid back down while Freckle stood staring up at the roof still waiting for the ball to drop.
3. The third example has happened frequently. We were sitting out on the deck in the evening. Duke will suddenly launch into the dark barking furiously. Freckles follows just as frantically but without a clue as to why. Duke runs about ten feet off the deck then stops while Freckles continues straight ahead to the fence still barking. I swear Duke is smiling as he returns to the deck.
I am absolutely convinced that Duke is just playing practical jokes on Freckles.
