I have been to Ikea only once, and I couldn't get out. What I had to see was just at the top of the escalator, but I couldn't get back down. I had to walk ALL THE WAY through every department, following the exit signs... to finally reach the end. By the time I got down there, I was not happy.

I need to go over there now to get some shelves, but I don't want to go through that again. Is there another way out and I am just stupid, or do you have to walk all the way through the store?

You have to walk ALL the way through. They're going to make sure you see everything they have before they let you out. :-\

That's why they have the coffee shop and restaurant and playground there. They want you to make a WHOLLLLE day of it. I'm surprised there aren't campgrounds too.

BWAAHHAA HAAA HAAAAA..... NO CHIT!

There HAS to be a way out of there. I don't need to see it all. After about the first 3.5 hours of trying to escape, I am seeing more red than what is on the EXIT sign. EXIT EXIT EXIT MY ARSE. There isn't really an exit. Like Dan said, you can NEVERRRR LEAVEEEEE.

BE VERY SCARED..... and if you do go in there, make sure you don't have to be any place real soon.

Don't you guys know about the secret shortcuts? They are there. Just ask someone who works there (otherwise you are destined to walk through the entire showroom).

Stew Leonards is the same way. Forget going there for milk and bread or backtracking to pick up something you forget. Everyone is walking the same way through the store and you have to fight the tide to go out the way you came in.

But....it is a model that works very well for both IKEA and Stew. I buy way more stuff at IKEA than I start out wanting whenever I go there. You can't be in a hurry to shop there.

IKEA scares me because its hard for me to find the fire exits too. I always look for those when I'm in a public place. I know they are there and its up to code, but it still makes me nervous.

I really hate Ikea. There stuff always falls apart. When I got married someone bought me all my measuring cups there. Well I hate to convert everything to cups and Tablespoons because it was in liters or something like that.

Also does anyone ever notice a large amount of breast feeding going on in Ikea? Every bedroom you go to look in there is a woman breast feeding. I have nothing against breast feeding and plan to do it myself someday, but no one is ever covered up. Not even a little bit! It makes me feel really akward as I am trying to show my husband a night stand......... I don't know that whole Ikea thing is weird for me....bad experiences........

They have little shortcuts but it's like going to a Casino. It's confusing on purpose. The bathrooms are always jammed and heaven forbid I need to use the Family restroom, someone is always camped out in there. I was there in January or December and I needed to get some mile for Makenna. It took me 40 minutes to get to the cafeteria, stand in line and then get back to my sister and the kids. I was beyond annoyed.

The husband and I went ONE time. It had taken us over an hour to find a parking spot and, at that point, there was no way weren't going in.

We spent the whole time we were in there discussing what would happen in that place in case of a fire. That little 'you can't get out till you see everything system' is going to cost them some day when one of those places goes up in flames.

I'm pretty sure that I'm still suffering from sort of post traumatic stress disorder over the entire experience.

The shortcuts are there - you just have to search for them. And, by the time you find them, you could have walked through the store anyway. :(
