Ok I FINALLY bought an IPod and I am clueless!! DD already had an IPod and has songs on our computer. So now she tells me that if I plug my Ipod into the computer all her songs will be on mine.

WHAT? I want to put my cds in and transfer them to my Ipod.

I am about ready to throw that thing!!

yeah I just checked with Eric... you can tell itunes what music to put on which ipod... your daughter might have hers set up to automatically put all the music in the library on her ipod but you can certainly limit what you put on.

I have to limit mine cause my nano could only hold about 1/4 of my library ;)

if you don't want to share your music at all, there is a way to start your own library of music. however, for me and SU, we like certain songs that are the same, so we do the playlist thing. he only download specific playlists so he can avoid other songs.

OK I was also told NOT to click the "sync" button but to manually manage my music.
Yeah... when you plug in the ipod it will go into a bit of a dialogue and ask you how you want to sync up your ipod... you can chose "by playlist" (which is what I recommend)... and then you just check the boxes near the playlists you want. (you will have to create the playlists yourself with whatever music you want to put on your ipod)... after you do this initial setup, each time you plug in the ipod it will automatically update those playlists. You can of course go back and change these preferences.

Since we are on the subject of Ipod questions....
I dont have an ipod. My Sony MP3 player is dying so I am thinking of buying an Ipod. If I have a friend come over can he somehow hookup up his ipod and download his songs onto my computer maybe via Itunes so that I can put them on my Ipod?

Laurie that's a complicated question involving the way itunes protects copywright which I hear is changing. I'm actually not sure if it's possible for him to do that without doing something that is either pretty complicated or illegal :p

Be aware: iTunes is raising prices on certain popular songs. They're no longer $.99 for everything.

DDs learned this the hard way when the iTunes gift cards they got in their Easter baskets were chewed through in about 20 seconds flat.

The first one's the toughest. Now that you know the process, it should be easier/faster. But I remember when mine was new and I was loading songs from probably 100 CDs, I spaced it out over a few days/weeks to save the wear-n-tear on my patience.

I'm sorry, but the worst thing about iPods are iTunes.. its the worst software i've ever had to use and i don't know why anyone likes that bloated POS.

I had an ARCHOS mp3 player a long time ago.. it showed up as a hard drive in My Computer and you just copy and pasted songs to that.. you could divvy up into folder or whatever you wanted.. it was the easiest way to handle.. itunes is the sucke.

Do you all use the same profile on your computer?

The kids use my laptop and each one has their own profile (well, Cameron doesn't use his, since he only plays on Lego.com, but anyway). With each profile, we have different iTunes accounts. So Kelsey logs into her profile and her iTunes account comes up when she plugs in her Nano. And when I am on my profile- my iTunes account comes up when I plug mine in.

I think you could still do it this way if you wanted.

Cant you buy MP3s from Amazon for 99 cents and then put it on your Ipod somehow? You shouldnt have to buy your music from Itunes do you?

First off this whole Ipod/ITunes stuff is Greek to me. My DD won't actually show me how it all works..she is a teenager she has no patience and then I DON'T!! She says just give it here and let me do it...then I say well I want to know how to do it...GAH It was so exhausting last night!!
