One of the kid's parents in my kids' school brought their dog (a little 15lb mutt) to the playground today. The poor dog's entire body is covered in a terrible skin infection. I mentioned it to my friend who was standing with me (she's a groomer) and she said she's told them about it and that it needs to be checked out. They are nice people, and love their pets, and right now they're broke, but I cannot believe they'd let it get that out of hand. That being said, I know they're broke and at this point I'd wager the dog hasn't been to the vet yet this year (or else the vet would have that dog on antibiotics).

I feel terrible for the dog (even though its not a very nice dog) and I don't know what to do. :( I think I will mention it to them when I see them at the end of the day.

poor puppy!! :(

We're strapped for cash ourselves, but we see our dogs as one of our kids so there is never the thought of "well we can't afford it...."

Sam's antibiotics never cost THAT much...I'm pretty sure under 10 bucks. When I'm not so lazy I'll go to the car and look. :D

Oh please, please say something. Can you imagine how badly that poor thing is suffering? That is animal cruelty for them not to have it checked and treated.

Just checked, Lucky's antibiotics cost me 9.75 and she's 72lbs and just had major surgery!

I don't know what the office visit would be, but I would hope the vet would work something out with them.

Hopefully they will do something about it. The dog is probably not very nice because it's in pain.
The dog has never been very nice. They got it from another family who's kids went to the school. They moved and had to give the dog away. It was healthy then, but still not the nicest ... She's not a horrible dog, just sort of stand-offish. I cannot imagine what the old family would think if they knew what kind of physical condition its in now. Poor thing.

I'm definitely going to say something. I know a few of the vets in the area and I'm pretty sure they'd be willing to help out with a payment plan or something. An office visit around here is about $60 (avg).

Probably has mange and it may be contagious. If they are not going to get the dog medical care that is incredibly cruel. They should give it up so a shelter can put it down.

I didn't see them after school.

It could be mange, I don't know what that looks like though. The dog's skin looks wrinkled and bumpy ... like tough old skin.
