Update: It is so great going to see a Specialist - I kick myself for not doing it sooner. His 70% assessment is a torn tendon in his shoulder which he says happens with dogs that are athletic. My guess is Moose hit the jump and tore it on the landing. We are scheduled for a bone scan next Wed. to verify the initial diagnosis. He says the bone scan will be the best next step. If by the remote chance he is wrong then it is neurological, which he doesn't believe it is. He wants me to keep Moose off of aspirins - he wants to see the inflamation that he felt in the leg today on the scan. I think it was the confidence in the dr.'s diagnosis that made me feel so great. And of course Moose was really spoiled - he is such a smooch. Dr. Vogle had a vet that was studying under him and also a vet student so lots of attention! We got out of their with no less than 4 big biscuits!
Oh, and if the scan shows the tear he suspects than it will be arthoscopic surgery. I'll keep you posted on the results of bone scan and good thoughts that the tear shows would be greatly appreciated. I am excited with the prospect that Moose can be fixed and we can get back to our normal routines - AND he will feel so much better which is what I want most of all.
I feel bad - seems like I only come on here lately when I need something - plus I can't see pictures from work anymore
I'm taking Moose to the ortho vet tomorrow for a 2nd opinion. He came up lame during a trial last Nov. I know he hit a jump, but I'm not sure that was the cause. We have had multiple xrays and a ultrasound and nothing shows up.
Sunday I finally decided I needed to get another opinion - hopefully just a fresh pair of eyes or opinion. We have marble floors in our entry and when he got up from sleeping he could hardly walk across them. His leg would go out to the side keeping him from getting a stable position - he finally did but it was slow going. This can't be right - he is only 5 years old. I give him aspirin for the pain and try to rub his leg and shoulder but it just won't go away.
Has anyone else dealt with anything like this that was so prolonged? I'm taking him tomorrow to the ortho vet that did Sky's TPLO surgery. It is about a 45 mile drive which is why I hadn't done it sooner. The facility does only ortho so I'm hoping they will have the experience to figure this out without guessing at what they could do. That is the part I don't like nor can afford. The last ortho vet who came highly recommended suggested I just wait it out and see if it went away on its own - if not the next step would be imaging, but I'm not convinced it is his shoulder and before I do that I want to feel fairly certain they are looking in the right place.
At the least - some good thoughts that they will have an answer. At this point I really don't want the "we can't find anything" type of news.
