Championship Overview

The Philadelphia Inquirer National Sudoku Championship is the first U.S. Sudoku Championship. Hosted by renowned puzzle master Will Shortz, the Championship is a great opportunity for enthusiasts from across the United States to test their skills. The Championship will have categories for all skill levels. The winner will automatically be granted a spot on the U.S. team at the World Sudoku Championship. Children are invited to attend. Participants are encouraged to take advantage of the social events that will be planned. (see below to view the weekend’s complete itinerary).
The Championship will be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, and will run from Friday, October 19 – Saturday, October 20, 2007, beginning with a Welcome Reception on Friday evening. The Championship itself will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2007.

One of the great things about the Championship is that many participants will have an opportunity to walk away a winner. Prizes ranging from $100 to $10,000 will be awarded for a variety of different categories. The winner of the advanced level of the Championship will win $10,000 as well as a spot on the US National Sudoku Team in which they will compete in the 2008 World Sudoku Championship in India. Expenses to and from the World Sudoku Championship will be paid for by The Philadelphia Inquirer as part of this prize.

Welcome Reception and Warm-Up Puzzles
Join us at the Championship’s Welcome Reception and meet fellow participants.

The Welcome Reception will be a mix of meeting other sudoku players and having an opportunity to warm-up your puzzle solving skills by practicing a variety of games.

National Sudoku Championship
Test your skills at the first-of-its-kind National Sudoku Championship. Hosted by renowned puzzle master Will Shortz, it is a great opportunity to meet new people and win exciting prizes.

Championship Dinner
The buffet-style dinner will be a casual event and all participants are invited to attend. The dinner is an opportunity for participants to get to know one another and recap about the excitement of the Championship.

Discounted rates on select historic tours and other activities if you register for the Championship.
Advanced Winner Prize: $10,000 plus a spot on the U.S. National Sudoku Team. Winner will compete in the 2008 World Sudoku Championship in India. Travel and accommodations to and from the World Sudoku Championship will also be paid for as part of the advanced level prize.
Intermediate Winner Prize: Winner will receive $5,000.

Beginner Winner Prize: Winner will receive $3,000.

Category Winners: Several awards will be presented to winners in a variety of categories. These winners will receive $100.
