$370,000 Ring Dropped Off Pier
Man Offers Reward For Orange Diamond Ring

POSTED: Tuesday, April 14, 2009

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A man lost a diamond ring appraised at $370,000 off the Main Street Pier in Daytona Beach over the weekend.

Robert Gismondi said he had just eaten at the Daytona Beach Pier restaurant when the ring slipped off his finger.

"I reached into my pocket to pull out a cell phone and when I pulled my hand out the ring just slipped right off, bounced and fell right in," Gismondi said.

He described the ring as having a large orange diamond with a white gold band.

Gismondi said the ring is a family heirloom handed down for two generations and he is desperate to find it.

"I was devastated. We ran back and got the guy that worked at the pier and we told him what happened," Gismondi said.

Gismondi has placed an ad in the paper and filed a police report. He has also filed a claim with his insurance company, which is planning to send dive teams out to the area to search for the ring.

Lifeguards said the tide could take it back out to sea, or it could be buried under the sand.

"If it would be found at all, it's going to take some really calm weather and some really low tides and we don’t have that right now," Scott Petersohn of the beach patrol said.

Gismondi is offering a reward "in the thousands," and has asked that anyone who finds the ring contact the Volusia County Beach Patrol.

Nice family heirloom. Wow.

Hard to feel bad for someone who can wear a "house" on his hand, but it sucks if it's a sentimental piece irrespective of monetary value. Yep, I'd be doing the metal-detecting scuba thing, too!

I do feel badly for him.

What is the point of having a family heirloom if you cannot wear it every now and again??

Of course, I'd probably want a police escort and glue the **** ring to my finger- but that's just me. lol

I don't know - I started to put on a pair of my grandma's earrings a couple months ago and chickened out. I have yet to wear them. I can promise you they're worth next to nothing in a truly financial sense. No way I'd have the balls to wear a $370k ring OUT!

I wear my stepmoms anniversary ring and necklace every single day, and would be devastated if anything happened to them. Neither are worth near that much money, but can understand him having an attachment to the ring- and for 370,000 who wouldn't;)

I am pretty sure I would have sent my dining companion to search for help while I jumped in after it! But yeah, if I had it I don't think I would be brave enough to wear it out!
