Like when you fry chicken or french fries?

I usually stuff newspaper in a large mayo jar and pour oil in and dump.

Is there a better way?

so it won't clog the drain?

A local radio station said never throw it down the drain... I am so tempted to, oil mixed w/Dawn detergent, which seems to break the oil up... To me, it seems a better way than to have a bottle of oil sitting in our landfill. :-X :-\

Oh yes it will clog the drain...you can break the oils up with Dawn dishwashing detergent...works good.

As for the environment....it's safe....if you can eat it...it can go in a landfill.

Compost it in your garden with other organic matter. If there is a co-op making fuel out of waste vegetable oil, see if they'll take your jars of used cooking oil. Restaurants sell their used oil to oil recycling companies, so perhaps a local restaurant would add your used oil to theirs for collection. There are more productive ways of getting rid of the oil than dumping it down the drain or dumping it in a land fill.
