I like LG Washers and Dryers and Whirlpool appliances. When we moved we bought a french door bottom mount Whirlpool fridge that I LOVE. It's amazing how little energy it uses compared to an older fridge.

Washers, dishwashers, and refrigerators are going to be the biggest bang for your buck energy-savings wise.

Consumer Reports is OK for general advice, but sometimes I wonder how reliable their top picks really are (for example, their vacuums).

It can be earth friendly to maintain what you have, except when what you own is really an energy hog. Old refrigerators, for example, waste huge amounts of electricity. And today's front loading washers use so much less water that it is really economical to change if your old washer goes out. Scrap metal is so valuable these days people are more than willing to take those off your hands...I doubt there are too many of those filling up the landfills.
