Energy Efficient Appliances

Don't spend a lot of time looking for Energy Star dryers. They don't exist. They all use about the same amount of energy (lots) to do their intended task. If you want energy efficient clothes drying, there's always a clothes line.

So anyone have any brand/model they recommend?

I like LG Washers and Dryers and Whirlpool appliances. When we moved we bought a french door bottom mount Whirlpool fridge that I LOVE. It's amazing how little energy it uses compared to an older fridge.

Washers, dishwashers, and refrigerators are going to be the biggest bang for your buck energy-savings wise.

I'm not much help as I prefer older maytag washers and dryers. I think it is more earth friendly to maintain and repair older more substantial appliances than to fill the landfills with the 2 year throw aways being made today (notice the 1 year warranties on new stuff!)

Of course my attitude is bad for the economy.

There are lots of old refrigerator recycling programs.

Consumer Reports is OK for general advice, but sometimes I wonder how reliable their top picks really are (for example, their vacuums).

It can be earth friendly to maintain what you have, except when what you own is really an energy hog. Old refrigerators, for example, waste huge amounts of electricity. And today's front loading washers use so much less water that it is really economical to change if your old washer goes out. Scrap metal is so valuable these days people are more than willing to take those off your hands...I doubt there are too many of those filling up the landfills.

We have always used Kenmore (Sears) and I have a Kenmore Washer and Dryer I have had for about 15 years. Only problem I ever had was I had to recently have the timer (I think) replaced on the washer. If/when I ever need a new pair, I'll probably go with the Kenmore brand again. As long as these continue to work well, I don't see any reason to replace them.

I used Consumer Reports magazine before I bought my new washing machine and dish washer. Since December my electric bill has gone down $20 a month and my water bill more than that. The dishwasher is the top rated Kenmore; I bought it without the pot scrubber feature which saved me about $100. The washing machine i a front load Bosch.
