Any suggestions on where to begin training for dock dogs? I'd love to compete in Feb at the SEWE in Charleston for the fun of it. We live in Charleston and have lots of water but I'm not sure where you start.

I assume with lots of water you're in SC. I would suggest checking the DockDogs website. Go to the forum page, there are several clubs on the east coast (Northern GA and VA area) Sometimes they have practices available where you can learn from people (and dogs) how to get started. I would suggest getting your dog to retrieve their favorite floating toy, on ground and then in the water. The dock will come later. Just try to encourage toy drive first. Good luck and big jumping!

I'll try those sites. He's not as gung-ho a retriever as my other lab was. It took me 3 lessons to teach her to retrieve the paper. He is not EVEN interested... unless you want to chase him. Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm in Atlanta and am a member of Dixie Dock Dogs. Unfortunately, we are the only club anywhere around you. The next closest club would be Chesapeake Club in Virginia.

You just need to find a dock somewhere and start jumping. The sportmutt website is a good one for training tips. But as far as coming to a competition....I'd definitely say come on out and try it. They have open dock practice time between waves (qualifying rounds) where you can try it on a regulation dock. And there will be people there to help you.

Good luck. It's a great sport!
