Morgan comes - reliably - when called. HOWEVER - he often does this at a slow leisurely pace, looking and smelling as he saunters back to me...how to correct?

ETA - he is 4.5 yo and this is a fairly new behavior...almost insolent!

Puff has gradually been getting to the sauntering stage.

I'm thinking of cooking up some of her favorite treats (dime sized slices of hot dog, sprinkled with a little garlic powder and then briefly nuked) and using some particular signal (e.g., whistle or something) to signify the "no fooling, right now, ASAP!" so we have a relaxed come and an immediate COME.

do you use a lead? one thing you can try is get a long lead (20' or longer) and anytime Morgan stops or even thinks about stopping a nice little tug with a "no come" with it. he will learn soon enough when you say come you don't mean come "whenever you feel like it"

here is a link to information on Limited Hold: Limited Hold

"The limited hold is scientific terminology—laboratory slang, really—for a good way to use the marker and reinforcer to speed up response to a cue."

Nope - this is on off leash recalls during play/run time...he sure knows the (not so) gentle tug from learning recalls as a brat baby!

Have you tried:
Call, wait for dogs attention, turn and quickly (decisively, but not running) start walking away?
I know it sounds simple, but it works more often than not.

I've done this a lot with dogs. walking down a trail, call, walk off into the woods. Sometimes I may need to wait (out of sight), but the dog always comes running looking like he lost something.
Only exception is at the end, the dog may run ahead and wait at the truck. I always leave the tailgate down and allow this as accepted practice. Never let a dog think it's NOT a good idea to go for a ride. It's a "safe restart" thing.
