Nothing beats Jersey fresh corn and beefsteak tomatoes. NOTHING!! Had local silver queen Saturday and Sunday. OMG I was in Heaven!!!
Amy -- You just brought back the fondest memory. My grandfather, my Dad's dad, was a bit of a scamp; he loved nothing more than poking fun -- never maliciously -- but with a real twinkle in his eye.
Once, we were on vacation (Ocean City NJ) and went to the large farmer's market @ 34th and West Ave. Among our purchases was corn, all fresh and ready, under a large sign reading JERSEY CORN -- PICKED TODAY!!
... Which was fine until Pop-pop's glance happened to fall under the table, where there was a supply of to-be-sold ears, sitting nicely in a crate marked IMPORTED FROM PUERTO RICO.
Of course, he just HAD to poke that crate out from underneath with his toe and in a voice intentionally loud enough to be heard, carped: "Wow. Look at this Jersey Corn!! Just out of the box from San Juan!!"
Within seconds, the manager had some hapless stock-kid there in an apron, dragging those crates away, red in the face.
No wonder we used to get escorted OUT of a lot of places when going w/my Pop-pop..............
