Confused Re Food -- Just started on Evo

Ugh. I am in a quandary re food. Rogie was eating Natural Balance Potato and Duck and was doing fine on it. We are trying to get him to lose a few lbs, so he was getting a little less food and a little more carrots (probably 3/4 of food, 1/4 of carrot, twice a day). Anyway, we decided to switch him after the scare with Natural Balance's Venison and Rice food. DH felt strongly about this (he usually doesn't react strongly), so we switched to EVO. Now I'm reading a lot about the potential for weight gain on EVO and am concerned. Rogie really doesn't need to gain more weight. He weighs about 82 lbs now and should be a few less. We only bought a small bag of the EVO, I wonder if I should switch when it's done. Thoughts re sticking with the EVO or switching would be appreciated. Also, if we switch, the question becomes, to what?

It is so high in calories and protein that it doesn't take much...which can lead to some problems if you don't have a pretty active dog. You can try it, and keep up with using low calorie fillers like carrots or green beans and see what happens. Also, you may want to up his exercise even more.

Otherwise, you may look into Eagle Pack if that's available. They have a similar philosophy as Natura, and are not implicated in any of the recalls. Is there a certain ingredient you're trying avoid? I ask, because NB Duck and Potato or EVO are often used with dogs that have allergies. Eagle Pack does have a duck formula, but I regularly feed their Holistic Chicken formula and I'm really pleased with it.

It is high in calories. How active is Rogie? Rider gets only 1c. 2x a day. He doesn't get many treats either...but we retrieve and swim almost daily. I love EVO and what it's done for Rider.

Rogie just turned 6. He is not that active. He is home just chilling out while we are at work. In the evenings he gets a nice walk, 30-45 min, and plays and romps with us in the backyard -- including games of fetch. We have a pool, but unfortunately, Rogie hates it. On the weekend, he gets longer walks, hikes in a local canyon and trips to the dog park (not all in one weekend). The only treats he gets are raw carrots. He does get marrow bones, white knuckle bones to gnaw on and sometimes he gets bully sticks. Honestly, I'd like to go back to the NB Potato and Duck when all of the recalls settle down, but not sure that will happen. Nick: Rogie was on Eagle Lamb and Rice and he didn't do very well -- itchy, dirty ears. Vet had us cut out all treats other than carrots.
