Chiropractor Visit

When I was younger I was born w/ scoliosis, and I had to wear ortho shoes and all that stuff. I had to go to the Chiropractor (I called him the crackly doctor) and I had to have my neck adjusted. I HATED this, because it hurt, and it was wierd to a 4 yr old. To this day I can't stand to have my neck touched.

When I was 6 I got hit by a car, and broke my leg, so now I have a leg that is a couple of ml shorter than my other leg. This made my hips uneven.

So now 34 yrs later, I'm having back problems again, and I don't want to go to my doc, because the drugs just make me a zombie, so I'm going to go back to the Chiropractor.

What should I expect?

A lot of crunching!! I have no clue I have never been to the bone popper. ;D
The first time, they will take xrays. They may or may not adjust you on the first appointment, because the dr. will want to review the xrays. Make sure you share with the dr the bad experience you had with chiropractic adjustment in the past. I think you might find, now, as an adult, that what you perceived as pain as a child may have been the childlike reaction to the strange feelings of have your neck adjusted. It really shouldn't hurt, but it will definitely feel strange! Make sure you follow the dr's directions and relax your body; it will make the procedure a lot less uncomfortable in the long run. For instance, when the dr adjusts your neck, he or she might ask you to drop you chin. If you back is adjusted, the dr will tell you to take a deep breath and let it out as he or she pushes down on your back. This will work best if you relax your muscles while he or she is pushing.

I look forward to my chiropractic adjustments. My headaches, which used to be blinding, are now all but gone!

Good luck and KUP!

Not so....I have been to my Chiro now 3 times and he hasn't adjusted me yet ;D Some are more aggressive in treatment than others, it REALLY depends. What I would do is get a referral from someone you trust.

I just found a great Chiro who focuses on alignment (non-agressively), physical therapy, and exercise. For long term, this should work better for me.

My last Chiro was the opposite...VERY aggressive and ended up hurting me more.

Mine did not take xrays.....I have a herniated disc....an xray won't show that, only an MRI
I go to the Chiropractor twice a week. Hips are my favourite adjustment! The chiro will pull your hips forward while pushing your upper body backwards and then you hear the crack. It does feel uncomfortable at first, but after a while you kind of look forward to the appointments!

Good luck!

Xrays!! If he doesn't insist on xrays first, find another.

But they use all sorts of things these days other than just popping you back into place. Hubby would go in, was hooked to electrodes that stimulated the muscles for a little, then would have a deep massage as well. And somewhere in there the doctor would adjust him.

It isn't all about "lay down, snap, crackle & pop and goodbye". It has changed quiet a bit.

I agree with all of this, and I forgot about the electrodes. They are great!

I like the guy my hubby went to. Don't know if he looked at hubby's chart, but looked at Xrays and said "you're a welder huh?"

Chart would have said electrician for trade, but he had been welding at the one job for over 6 months!! Doc told him to stop snapping his hood down with the flick of the neck! Just from looking at the Xray!!
Everything above is pretty correct. I've went to the chiropractor since I was an infant off and on and LOVE IT. Trying to relax will help a lot because if your muscles are tense they are not going to be able to adjust as much. I've been to numerous chiropractors over the years and all of the are different and use different methods of adjusting you and different tools. Ask around to find one your comfortable with if you go and are not comfortable find a different one.
