The CD trapped in there runs, but the drawer/door/slide-out thingy won't open when the button is pushed nor when you right click on the drive and choose eject.

What are the chances we could slip something like a knife blade in there and pry it open without too much damage??

Any suggestions are appreciated.

There should be a really tiny hole next to the drive somewhere, stick a straightened paperclip in it, you will feel a little "button" with resistance, push the end of the paperclip against it, the door should open.

G'day,

When you do restart your computer, check to see if there's any lights flashing on the front of the drive. If there's lights but no action, chances are turning your computer off then trying the paperclip trick will work.
If there's no lights or the drive disappears from My Computer, then it might be shot and requireing replacement.

Cheers,

Pottsie
