Or is it most likely a pulled muscle?

I hate to post again about my cough. I'm normally not a wimp. LOL.

Anyways, the left side of my ribs are killing me. Breathing hurts. Coughing is pure hell. I mentioned to my doctor that my side hurt from coughing, but he didn't check it out and to be honest, it wasn't as bad on Tuesday as it is today.

I just took some advil in hopes of finding some relief. I can't even lift anything. I was going to clean the garage out today, but that is a no go. I'm not sure if I should get it check out or not. There isn't really anything that can be done for it, right?

It is possible to break a rib from coughing, it happened to a friend of mine when she had pneumonia. I pulled a muscle sneezing once, and that felt like a broken rib :).

Did you get to the doctor, Aim?

I have costochondritis. It's a condition where the cartilidge between the ribs gets inflamed and "pops" if I do something strenuous. Coughing can do it. I get it a couple of times a year and it lasts about 3 weeks. I have it now as a matter of fact, this time caused by opening the dryer door (it was stuck). Another time it happened when I was trying to pop the cork out of a wine bottle. It feels like a broken rib. I can't cough, lift anything, God forbid I have to sneeze! Can't lie on that side without being in excruciating pain....it sucks. Three Advil every 4 hours and heat is my Drs. treatment.

Wanted to add, when I do have to cough or sneeze, pressing down on the area eases the pain.

Aim, costo happens on the left side only 99% of the time! Is the area tender to the touch?

It is tender to touch. And I do put pressure on the area when I cough, as it seems to help.

I took some cough syrup and an advil. That has helped quite a bit. Except now I feel like I'm moving in slow motion! LOL

I broke a rib from coughing when I was a teenager. My doctors never checked it out--they didn't think it could happen. Take care of yourself. Would it help, do you think, to wrap your ribs with an elastic bandage, not too tight? It might give you some support.
