Hi everyone -

I posted last week about my puppy Buddy who got parvo last week. Well he is recoverying from the parvo, but still cant walk. Here is a little summary of the past week:

Buddy - 4 mo lab - was diagnosed last Tuesday wth Parvo. He stayed at the vet until Thursday afternoon when I picked him up. While there - he had a hig fever 105-106 and it took awhile for them to get it down. Otherwise though - he had minimal vomiting and no diarreah. Thursday night he laid pretty much all night. I had to carry him to the car from the vet. They said he had walked but he couldnt walk when I picked him up. I assumed he been laying for 3 days and so weak. Friday still could not walk but was eating, drinking and could hold up head and would lay on stomach and look around. Even showed signs of playing with me etc. Sat, he still could not walk, get up or anything. Saturday I took him to ER vet and they checked blood levels - all ok. Thinks he is just weak from illness and to give it more time since he seems alert, eating and drinking. Saturday night - he needed to poop so he got up - barely - but did and walked across yard to go. Sunday - he walked a tiny but again - very shaky. Monday - also was able to walk slowly (I had to pick him up to start) around house if I have treats. But gets tired and falls back down. His joints seem to hurt if you lightly squeeze on them. He seems very shaky. I took him back to my vet on Monday and they examined his joints and think he just has inflammed joints from being sick. This is very hard on me to see him just lay ALL day and not be able to get up or anything. I carry him (32lbs of lab) around the house, and out to pee. Since Monday - he doesnt really want to walk at all, and mostly lays. still eating and drinking ok.

MY question is - has anyone else's dog showed this type of recovery from Parvo? The vet said he almost died and is weak and will take time to gain his strength back. He is a lanky lab and skinny and all, but everything Ive read has no info on this and I cant find anyone with similar experience. The vet even said he hasnt seen it. Is it too soon? Any advice or experience is appreciated. Its breaking my heart to see him this way. Im losing hope he will recover. I know it takes awhile but I just dont know what to do.

Thank you - Christina

Well Ive only went to that vet for shots - then when Buddy got parvo - I went there. Basically they are saying he could have nuerological issues from the fever. The Specialist I was referred to wants to do xrays etc to rule out other things before proceeding towards a neurological issue. At this point - I just dont have the money for random testing to eliminate other things. Ive already spent $800. I know I will have to proceed one way or another by next week if no improvement though. I will be going to another vet from this point forward though. I wish I could find out if the fever or parvo could have done this. He was walking when I took him in and now he isnt. He just seems so weak and shaky when he does walk and when I press on his joints he whines. Like maybe the parvo virus inflammed his joints like arthritis?

My Bear had parvo and was extremely ill and hospitalized for a week. When they release him there were no after affects. I am certainly no expert but the explanation your vet is giving you does not make much sense to me

is it possible you are catering to your poor sick puppy to the point he doesn't need to walk?
I have had quite a few dogs with parvo (one of the joys of fostering high risk puppies) and none have ever recovered but been unable to walk :(

I think maybe he needed to be under IV another day and maybe a longer stay at the vet.
I had a dog who had a parvo-like illness though they told me it was not parvo but it sure acted/smelled/looked like parvo. It took her a while to bounce back but she sayed for more than 2 days at the vet. She was on IV for a full 2 days and another 3 days in intensive care.

I thought he should have been there longer although I was glad to have him home.

I dont think Im catering to him. If I dont do anything - he will literally lay there all day. I only move him to go the bathroom and give him food and water. He will try to get up and cant and then gives up. If Im in another room and he cant ssee me, he will commando scoot to get to the hall way. If he can see me, he gives up and wont crawl anymore. He also will bark at my dog when he wants to play but cant get up to get to him.

I dont think its parvo related but what else could it be. It wasnt there before he went in. Im going to give it until after Memorial day and then go to another vet.

Oh yeah - I forgot to answer - his fever was 106 on Tuesday and 105.4 on Wednesday. Went away by Thursday morning. He was left alone in a crate at night (something I didnt know when I left him) But I dont think he had the energy to move or try anything when he was in there since he was so sick

He is doing great! He still stumbles every now and then - and has gotten lazier!! But overall I would say he is doing good. Needs to gain some weight now. Thanks for checking!!!

I would put him on NuVet Supplement. Every dog should be on it anyway. Our breeder requires that we give it or the lifetime health guaranty is voided. It's not expensive either.
