Okay so I'm taking this class called Self, Society and Technology and I thought this was an interesting topic.. I have to write about it for class tomorrow.

Techno-optimists:
Tend to believe that technology is not responsible for social problems, but an important means to their solution.
Technology integral to progress.

Techno-pessimists:
Tend to emphasize the risks and costs of technological change; believe technology is responsible for many social problems; skeptical of “technological fixes” to social problems.
Technology unimportant to progress.

Using a 10 point scale, place yourself on the continuum between techno-optimism and techno-pessimism (0 = extreme techno-pessimism, 10 = extreme techno-optimism)

What are you?

I think I am right in the middle.. around a 5 maybe a little bit more towards optimism like a 6 or 7.. I think that technology can be a very good thing.. I am very into technology and love all of my gadgets like computers, cell phones, iPods, BluRay players and all of that, but at the same time, I think things like violent video games and things of that sort can be done away with..

Funny - even before I saw the scale I had decided I was a techno-centrist ;)

I do not think technology is responsible for social ills - all societies have issues. People cause the problems - not the tools. But the inverse is true of that too - progress shouldn't just be defined by technological progress ... and people are the ones responsible for human progress..

Techno-pessimists:
Tend to emphasize the risks and costs of technological change; believe technology is responsible for many social problems; skeptical of technological fixes to social problems.
Technology unimportant to progress.

I am very skeptical of any "quick cure" for any issue

very interesting topic - happy writing

I'd say an 8 or a 7. I think technology is basically neutral and it's what people chose to do or not to do that causes problems.

Techno-centrist here as well. So score me 5.

I agree that tech is basically neutral but the issue becomes one of its use.

Yes, bennies have been abundant and rich. Think of the imaging systems that are now being used to diagnose cancers and other illnesses. Laparascopic surgeries that are speeding recoveries. Heck, the advances in care of preemies alone is stunning and would have been unheard of 50 yrs ago.

But we're also becoming, IMHO, more distant and fragmented as a result. iPods cancel conversation. Cellphones connect us 1:1 with each other instantaneously -- little downtime. People text in the BATHROOM for god's sake. Our fast-paced lives have become even faster. Which can be a detriment. Easy to become isolationist. And lost in internet worlds that include violence, porn, racism, etc. etc.
