WHISTLER, British Columbia (AP)—A men’s Olympic luger from Georgia crashed during training Friday and is receiving emergency treatment.

Officials said Nodar Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled, went over the wall of the track and appeared to hit a steel pole near the finish line at the Whistler Sliding Center.

Rescue officials rushed to the scene and were performing chest compressions as well as mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Kumaritashvili was lifted into an ambulance. An air-rescue helicopter was summoned and was in the area over the track about eight minutes after the crash.

Horrible...I didn't realize how dangerous that sport really was.

All those sports on those tracks are very dangerous.

He apparently went head first into a pole going 130km/hr. (80mph)

How horrible. They showed it on the news, the crash and all.....it made me sick to my stomach. In fact, they played it over and over and over and over.....I can't imagine having to see the accident if I were the family (especially over and over again). How horribly tragic and sad.

I dont understand why they felt the need to show the crash over and over on TV. So disrespectful and in very poor taste, ABC---> BOO!
Terrible way to begin the games. God bless him and his family.
