Abby (4 1/2 yrs) has had patella surgery '06, however after long unleashed walk, swim'ng she gingerly places weight on left hind leg and if really bugging her she will carry it. visited vet this week, took x-rays, patella fine, however he believes tear in "acl" believes "tplo" surgery is way to go. We also spoke about pain management (the use of prevecox/1/dy and tramadol 2/dy) Have any of u had this problem or used these drugs? what did u do, what comments do you have. thanks for reading

my dog, jax, just had this surgery on wednesday. he is doing great. surgery is not cheap. he was on previcox and tramadol for 10 days prior to surgery; it helps, but the pain is still there and they are usually very good at masking it. it was extremely overwhelming leading up to the surgery; his was completely torn. i'm glad we did it; now just moving on to the healing stages which are going to be around 2-4 months.

Zoezoe, thanks for looking this over, couple of question: how old is Jax, what was overwhelming? what to do, % of success, if it doesn't work?, any big pros or cons, vet @ an hour north of us quoted $3300, abby also has a pin that needs to be removed from a patella surgery a 1 year old, let me know how everything goes on this thread---

jax is a rescue believed to be around 2.
so far he has been a poster child for success...no swelling, incision looks great, he is toe touching quite a bit with that leg and also putting some weight on it when he walks out to go potty.
it's overwhelming keeping them quiet for 8+ weeks; probably more. keeping them crated, walking them in the cold, watching to make sure they don't get at those stitches, keeping a head cone on for 2 weeks; preparing for the surgery with throw rugs; kongs, marrow bones, etc., as well as worrying about what sort of pain they will be in.
jax seems to be handling it all pretty well; I contribute it to a lot of prayers he got from good friends.
surgery can be anywhere from $1000 for the traditional type of surgery to as high as $4000+ depending on where you are. we had a surgeon move his practice to our area just a month or two ago, so we received a "special" pricing. Thank God for that, too.
There are lots of CCL tear stories on the web; just put it in google and you can spend hours reading.
Jax also has plates/pins in his other leg from 8 weeks ago when I found him in a shelter with a broken leg. He had to have it surgically repaired.
