Wow - that was the most organized fetch session I have ever seen.

If I try a multiple fetch session, even with loads of different balls, it goes a little something like this: Trick fetches the ball (he is the fastest), Murph and Joker charge after him and steal the ball, Murph and Joker play keep away with each other. Then the dogs are only interested in the ball the other dog has got. :

yeah, she gets knocked down sometimes, but it's almost like she's made of rubber. she's highly resilient and bouncy, too. the labs and penny are all usually really good about looking out for each other and getting out of each others way to avoid impact.

naw... it's all them. ;D they will retrieve this way no matter who the ball thrower might be. come over sometime and you can be a good juggler, too.

occasionally, there might be a mix up, but it's no big deal for them to sort it out (it's funny to see luke spit out a ball he picked up by mistake) or they simply switch balls as if nothing changed.

when taylor became the 2nd dog, we had a problem with her chasing luke and trying to take his ball, but we worked with taylor in getting her to start focusing on her own ball, and letting her get the first toss during the retrieves really helped, too. although she seemed to enjoy harrassing luke and taking his ball, in her case, i think the problem was mostly due to poor impulse control.

now, taylor will wait, be last, or do just about anything else to have her turn at a retrieve. of my three, taylor is the most reliable and disiplined about retrieves or any other activity for that matter. corrections are useless with her. she doesn't seem to be able to learn that way, but once she figures out how something works, she's really dedicated and focused on what needs to be done.

teaching dog #3, penny, how to join our circus wasn't too difficult. ;D penny used to chase after the labs, too, but being so small, the labs easily ignored her. after some time, penny realized she could retrieve her own ball if she wanted too.

 

That was so fun to watch. Penny really is an honorary Lab, isn't she?

Yes, a juggling act, for sure. I am amazed at the restraint your dogs show, yet they still thoroughly enjoy their "jobs". I stand in awe.

 

I love how fast little Penny moves! They bring the ball back so calmly. Cinder always does a victory lap around me before she gives me the ball. Everytime.

 

My DH says, "Wow. That was amazing. Just wow. Can you come train our dogs." ;D

Now just how did you go about teaching Taylor NOT to charge after Lukes ball? I have two and the newest one (Teddy, yellow male) has no impulse control! I would love to teach him to only go after his ball. Poor Jefferson always winds up giving his ball to Teddy.

I am amazed. Why do they not fight over one ball? ??? If I tried that, there would only be one ball in play. The one in Angus' mouth. Which Simon would be trying to remove.

I too am in awe. What great coordination! When I throw a ball, any ball, both dogs chase it. Finley is faster so he usually gets it. Then, like the passing of a baton, Kira gets the ball from his mouth on the return journey and delivers it to the thrower. If only I could get them to each chase their own ball, I think everyone would have more fun. Also, if Kira is on her way back with the ball and someone throws a different ball (usually for their own dog), Kira will drop her ball and chase the new one. It's a bit embarrassing because then she will bring it back to the person who threw it and they end up playing fetch with her instead of their own dog.

At our Labfests, it's usually as Trickster or Angus described -- except Puff is non-competitive and usually doesn't try to retrieve if another Lab is going to contest it.
