hve you read "hen and the art of chicken maintaince" he tells the story of a hen who went "off her legs" and how he rehabbed her ....

how did you make the connection to get your hens - I'm looking for hens right now (in Ontario, Canada sadly not anywhere near you) and I'd love to get some 'spent' girls

That's wonderful - I am quite sure there isn't a hen rescue in my bit of Ontario ...
I have thought about driving up to the local fctory chicken farms and asking if they'd sell me a layer instead of turning her into soup ...

The hen in the book had to be helped up with a sling for a few minues at a time - eventually she was strong enough to stand on her own but nervous to walk so needed to be bribed wth food treats to get going ... it's a pretty hilarious accounting of life with chickens actually

Yes definately keeping her..she is laying on a towel on my living room floor, eating and drinking but herself now and when i lift her she puts weight on 1 leg and not the other. Funny thing she plopped herself to one side, i thought she was trying to get up..lifted her 5 mins later and she had laid an egg! She didnt make a sound!
