Injuries at 3-Alarm High Rise Fire

Seven paramedic units were called in a smoky 3 alarm fire in a 14 story high rise building for elderly residents at XXXXX on Milwaukee's east side. One resident was taken to Columbia St. Mary's hospital with critical injuries.
This is one block away from me... I looked out my windows and the whole street is blocked off and there are fire trucks everywhere.

Umm... forgive my ignorance... but what is the significance of a "three alarm" fire? I know I've heard of a "five alarm"... I'm assuming the higher the number... the worse it is?

I think it means they've had to call in three different fire stations. So for a five alarm fire- it's five different stations.

But don't quote me on that. ;)

OHHHHHH... that makes sense.

Two were hurt... no one died... but one is "critical"

Normally I don't really care about local news. The rape/armed robbery trends I pay attention to (as a single female)... but other than that... nada. This time it was right on my street so I was a bit more interested than usual.
