Labrador Retriever #1 Breed In The US For 2011

Once again, the Labrador Retriever wins the top spot in America’s heart, as the breed secures the #1 spot on American Kennel Club’s (AKC) Most Popular Breed List.

The Labrador Retriever has held this spot for 21 consecutive years, thanks to its reputation for playfulness and loyalty, and its use as a police and search-and-rescue dog. Other notables on the list include the Beagle, which made big news by knocking the Yorkshire Terrier out of the third spot, while the Golden Retriever advanced from the fifth to the fourth most popular dog breed. Not making the list this year was the Shih Tzu – the breed was overtaken in popularity by the Rottweiler.
