Defaultteaching my new lab to quarter

I got a new lab puppy about 6 months ago and hes a great dog. Im training for hunting and it is going well however he wont leave my side. I started him retrieving dummies with scent and blind retrieves and he does great. Last week i hunted teal over him and he did great. But i hunt mostly upland birds and hes constantly at my side. Hes only 8 months and i hope he outgrows it. He loves to please and is very obedient but he cant figure out what i want him to do. The last lab I had was extremely hyper, and never listened and i had to train him to stay in range. This dog is timid and maybe a little insecure. My friend trains Chessies told me that timid dogs like this make great bird dogs however i cant figure out how to teach him to hunt. Thanks

    1) Get in touch with your local HRC/AKC hunt test/field trial club, join and learn! Having a group of "been there done that" folks to help when you need it is invaluable. You can find your local club via the Hunting Retriever Club or American Kennel Club websites.

    2) Get Julie Knutson's book "Training the Pointing Labrador." Google her name and you will find it. It is the best thing out there for training upland labs, IMHO. GET YOUR OB ROCK SOLID!!!

    Good Luck!
