DefaultA bit of "Tough Love" for Puff

As some of you know, Puff & I go for a 2 mile/3.2 km offleash walk in a nearby nature preserve early every morning. It's located just east of a large parking lot that serves a cluster of softball & soccer fields, tennis courts, etc. The lot's maybe 400 yards/365 m. long and quite wide, its entrance is just off a main street we first use on the way home; we park at the far end, closest to the trails of the preserve.

    Puff loves this parking lot.

She's like farm kids in the 1930's going to the annual county fair -- so much novel to see and do. There are multiple trash barrels each of which have sprinkles of goodies around them from the softball/soccer crowds the night before plus it's an area where many other people also bring their dogs as I do so there are always so many new pee-mail messages to read and reply to.

So it's not surprising that, when we've finished our walk and I'm heading to our car and calling "Puff! Come!", Puff mumbles the dog equivalent of "innaminit" and continues her exploring, sniffing, scarfing, pee-sponding.

Tuesday morning she was very hard of hearing so I got in the car by myself, shut the door, started the car and began driving toward the street. There were no other cars moving in the lot and very few parked at that time.

Puff was surprised to see her chauffeur move without her and tried to run in front of the car, as if indicating, "here I am, wait for me!" but I avoided her and sped to the street, Puff running full tilt after me.

I finally stopped, let her in, and Puff panted most of our 5 minute trip home.

A somewhat similar behavior happened yesterday morning.

This morning, Puff was right beside me all the way to our car.

    I think tough love works.

Hah! We tried that with our mutt growing up. Unfortunately, she pretty much shrugged and said, "I'll find my way home later." We had to leash her up well before we wanted to leave.

That would scare the hell out of me. I would be afraid to run her over.

I was careful to see where she was and where the car was heading.

This morning, I had my very obedient Lab back again.
