Sometime after Archie turns 4 months, I have to make a trip to S. California. I think it's too far to bring Archie (7 hours by car), so I am starting the process of looking at kennels/spas in our area. We'll be gone for a total of 3 to 3 1/2 days. Any ideas about what to look for in a spa/kennel?
Are you on good terms with the breeder? They may be able to board the dog.
With kennels it's best to go visit or get referrals. If you know anyone that had dogs ask. Call your vet and ask.

we have to board Milly in August for 4 days while we go to Cairns. We are boarding her where Dave's parents board their sheltie... so we were recommended to the boarding place that we found.
You can always look for places and if a few interest you arrange to visit them and check out their facilities before making your decision. They usually don't mind a visit from you (at least in Australia anyway) and IMO if they didn't want you to check out their facilities I'd steer well clear... there would have to be a reason!!
7 hours isn't too long of a trip for a dog. Hudler had to take an 8 hr trip when we brought him home from the breeder. Then we went on a 10 hr. trip for a camping vacation about a month later.
It's one thing if you CAN'T bring the dog where you are going, but it's not too long. I would rather bring the dog with me than kennel it, if I had a choice.
