Default9 week old Choc ~ During the night bathroom trips

Riley is just over 9 weeks. He is in a crate in our bed room. Every 2-3 hours he whines like he is going to blow until he is let out to go to the restroom during the night. He pee's/poops I put him right back in without treats or excessive praise.

How do I get him to sleep through the night, I can tell he really has to go it is not the fake let me out of the cage cry. I know he can hold it for 4-5 hours during the day when my wife and I come and go for work. I exhaust him at night and have multiple 5-10 min traning sessions before bedtime.

    Thanks.

At this point, you are just going to have to wait for him to grow, and as he grows, his night time trips out will cease. Good he's letting you know he wants out though, that's huge for this age!

Don't worry, the sleep deprivation does stop. Eventually.

I to went through outings several times a night. I started to put one of the sweatshirts I was wearing in the bathroom with him. That helped for a while. I think they just get lonely, there so used to waking up and having brothers and sisters around. Most of the time I think Bogey cried out of isolation. Anyway around 11 or 12 weeks after 2:30am potty break I just brought him back to bed with me. Slept like a baby! Btw we still get up a least 1 time during the night but thats better than 3 or 4.

It's totally normal. Above normal since he's telling you he has to go. Do give him praise. He'll realize that the praise is for going potty outside and not related to the time of day. He'll eventually sleep for the night, but you probably have a few more weeks of this. Better to get up and let him out instead of getting up and cleaning up accidents!

Make sure you praise him everytime he goes. Even though it reeaaallllyy sucks standing out there in the backyard in the middle of the night in your underwear, it's Partytime when he goes to the bathroom!!! ;D

Whatever you do, DO NOT withhold water. I was told that it was OK to take water up at 8:00 pm every night while housetraining, and not to offer water in the crate.

Long story short: By doing this I basically gave my puppy a UTI and crystals in his urine. :-\

Good luck, and after a few weeks it gets better, promise!!

Taking the water up is common practice with puppies. It's recommended in puppy training books and even here on the forums. Even my vet told me to do this. Never had any problems with my pup in doing this and have never heard of it being a problem.

That's exactly what I thought (except my vet scolded me for doing it - I hadn't asked her...whoops). Until it made Baloo sick. :-\

I'd rather have an extra accident or two than a sick puppy.
