    DefaultNew Puppy, New Name?

We are looking to get a four month old AKC black lab. She is already named and we really don't like the name. Do you think changing the name is an okay thing to do or would it really confuse the dog? Seems like she is young enough to be able to do this. Any thoughts? Thanks!

As the old vaudeville joke goes, "you can call me anything you want -- just don't call me late for dinner!"

Changing the name will be no problem. Many of us use several different names for our dogs (e.g., my Puff answers to Puff, Poocho, Poocharina, Sweetie, Little Girl, etc.)

Not a problem. Just think about all the dogs (even adult dogs) that have been rescued. Few came into rescue already named. In Murray's case, he was a stray but I'm sure he had a name before that. Then rescue took him from County and gave him the name Murray. I was going to change it but Murray fit him so well that we decided to keep it. He was 2 at the time. If a 2 yr old can learn a new name, a 4 mth old will not have an issue. ;D

I had a pup named Alley from my last litter until she was almost 20 weeks and her new owner changed her name with no problem

As poste., our dogs come to numerous names.

change the name...that way you can bond with the dog. Dogs don't recognize the name itself but they are conditioned when we associate the name to something good. People usually praise a dog when they call it, then pet it, feed it, walk it, so on...they understand name=something good!!

My dog's name was Trina when I got her. Are you kidding me - I would never call her that way. The first few days I just called her name and gave her a cookie so she knows that is her name.

Okay, any ideas for names, now? She is a black female AKC lab. 4 months old. Man, names are really hard!!
Thanks for the advice. I like the advice about the bonding. That is so true. We get her on Saturday so we are pretty excited. We had to put our chocolate lab down in October. She was 9 1/2 and had liver cancer so this is really a big step for us. Kids are really excited! (me too!)
    Thanks again........

I suggest you spend a week or two with the new girl and see if a name doesn't associate itself with her -- that one particular name is more fitting.

My 2 dogs were both rescues.

The lab started out as Choco (??) became Charlie for a couple of weeks and then we named him Diesel. Deez was 6 months when we got him.

My Dutch Shepherd was Jill (for a dog??) and then we called her Lucy - fits her better. She was 4 months old.

And my lovely Reo had been Sheba. Got her at 6 months and she learned her new name in just a few days.
